Lessons in Leadership: “Beyond Myths & Stereotypes”

The Greater Washington Chapter of Ascend invites you to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month featuring an inspiring TED-style talk with two highly successful millennial leaders — Tim Hwang (Founder/CEO of FiscalNote) and Calvin Sun, MD (Founder/CEO of The Monsoon Diaries). They will share their stories of their winding paths to the success, how they define career fulfillment, and the many lessons learned along the way. After the talks, join us for a rooftop networking reception (food and drinks provided) with opportunities to meet the speakers and other rising leaders in DC’s Pan-Asian community.

About the Speakers

Mr. Tim Hwang is the Founder and CEO of FiscalNote, a real-time legal analytics platform that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and natural language processing to help global organizations take control of their government risk and understand the law. The company now powers some of the world’s largest and most influential law firms, legal departments, and governments supported by offices across the US, Europe, and Asia. With Hwang’s technology and over $40M+ in funding from the likes of Mark Cuban, Jerry Yang, Steve Case, NEA, Renren and others, FiscalNote is revolutionizing access to legislation, regulations, and court cases for organizations around the world. Prior to starting FiscalNote, Mr. Hwang started his career in politics as a field organizer for the Obama ’08 campaign. A year later, he was elected to the Montgomery County Board of Education a year later overseeing a $4B+ budget for 22,000 public employees. He is the founder of Operation Fly. Inc., a national 501(c)(3) organization that served inner-city children in underprivileged areas around the country in addition to being profiled in Forbes 30 Under 30, Inc. 30 Under 30, CNN’s Top 10 Startups, Business Insiders Top 25 Hottest Startups, among others. A graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Hwang is a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer and a member of the The Economic Club of Washington, D.C. as well as the Young Presidents Organization (YPO).

Dr. Calvin Sun is a New York-based Emergency Resident Physician, civil rights activist, choreographer, entrepreneur, and one of the youngest Asian American TED Speakers. He graduated from Columbia University and SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and is an award-winning independent filmmaker. He is best known for his films on Asian American stereotypes and female body image, the last of which won the inaugural One to Watch Audience Award at the 2007 Asian American International Film Festival. His work on Asian American Beauty and body image has been published in various articles and books, including The American Beauty Industry Encyclopedia. Dr. Sun is also the Founder & CEO of The Monsoon Diaries, a blog-turned-accidental travel company that has taken hundreds of his readers to 100+ countries in the past 5 years which include building a free clinic in Tijuana and visiting places like North Korea, Iran, Antarctica, Pakistan, and Myanmar. The Monsoon Diaries has been featured on TED, National Geographic, USA Today, and Business Insider.
