Committee Highlight

Student Affairs – Clifford Kim & Hyojoo Choi

Ascend GW’s Student Chapters are comprised of the University of Maryland (College Park), Johns Hopkins University, and George Washington University. We are excited to announce that the George Mason University Chapter will join our family later this year!

In addition to the various events hosted by Ascend GW’s Student Chapters, one of Student Affairs’ signature events – Consulting Boot Camp – is currently being planned for December. It’s at this event where students are teamed-up and coached by sponsoring firms, like Deloitte and KPMG, to compete for a cash prize. The program is designed to introduce students to consulting, as an industry and potential career choice, teach and train students on core consulting skills (e.g. research and analysis, storyboarding, presentation preparation, data visualization), and allow students the opportunity to emulate a realistic consulting engagement and environment.

In August, the Student Affairs Summer Social featured “Lessons from the Magic Kingdom” where professionals and students gathered for networking, food, and team-building games while sharing insights and takeaways from Ascend’s 2016 National Convention & Career Fair at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.

Professional volunteers are eagerly welcome to get involved! Contact us at AscendGWC.StudentAffairs@gmail.com to volunteer and participate today!

20160915_190307

Big thanks to all who attended the September Happy Hour at BlackFinn Ameripub in Washington DC. Our featured speaker, Molly Bauch — IT manager, news producer, and adjunct professor of communications at George Washington University — spoke to a packed house of nearly 150 people. She shared useful and actionable tips for professional networking that attendees immediately put to good use mingling and networking with fellow professionals and Ascend board members at the event.

One attendee wrote, “It was very well organized and the large turnout clearly reflected the dedication of all the officers. The guest speaker was wonderful. She had excellent stage presence and offered extremely useful tips on professional communication. I can’t wait for the next event!”

Launching the Corporate Executive Leadership Program (CELP)

celp1Ascend GW kicked off CELP with a weekend-long retreat welcoming 10 participants as the program’s first cohort:

  • Mary Lee, Deloitte
  • Linda Nguyen, Capital Automotive REI
  • KT Thomas, Freddie Mac
  • Connie Weber, Deloitte
  • Heng Wei, PwC
  • Deepak Jain, Freddie Mac
  • Rick Lee, Ernst & Young
  • Aimee Meher-Homji, Accenture
  • Ameer Ali, Accenture
  • Eric Wu, Accenture

The kick-off event involved a mind-mapping exercise led by Deloitte Principal, Winson Heng, followed by an educational wine-tasting networking event providing a great foundation building a sense of community for the two-day retreat that followed.celp2

The two-day retreat resumed in Warrenton, VA featuring Executives, Wes Hom and Amy Shang, leading a series of engaging sessions like “Myths of Asian Leadership”, “Corporate Culture”, and “Power and Influence” among many other important topics for developing future Pan-Asian executives.

In addition to interactive training, other unique sessions included a culinary team-building event and a “fire-side chat” with the executive mentors as they shared their personal experiences, stories, and insights. These events received resounding praise and was expressed, universally, as the most memorable moments.

The successful launch couldn’t have been possible without the program’s inaugural sponsor, Accenture, as well as support and facilitation from Wes, Amy, and the Ascend GW Executive leadership. Special thanks to the planning team – Ivana Lee, Ruchir Narayan, Jennifer Nielsen, Aining Zuo, and Zhixuan Li.
